Newcastle Unitedov povratak u Premier League je počeo katastrofalno, pravom noćnom morom.

Posle samo sedam minuta igre povredio se Paul Dummet (mišić), kojeg je zamenio Lascelles. Nešto kasnije, tačnije u 34. minutu Harry Kane je brutalno startovao na Lejeunea, koji je posle tog starta morao da napusti igru zbog povrede članka i očekuje ga pauza od nekoliko nedelja. U igru je umesto visokog Francuza ušao Mbemba. Kane je za taj start dobio samo žuti karton.

Tottenham u prvom poluvremenu nije pokazao neku posebno dobru igre. Uglavnom je pretio udarcima sa distance preko Eriksena.

Sa druge strane, Gayle je u jednoj situaciji pao u protivničkom šesnaestercu, ali je sudija Marriner pokazao da je prethodno bio ofsajd, tako da penala nije ni moglo da bude. Atsu je takođe stvarao dosta problema svojim čuvarima po levom boku.

Igrao se 48. minut utakmice kada je Jonjo Shelvey zgazio Delle Alia na članak dok je ovaj ležao na travi. Sudija Marriner jednostavno nije mogao da veruje šta je Shelvey uradio. Marriner je pokazao direktan crveni karton Shelveyu.

Na 0:0 Kane je imao jednu odličnu šansu sa sedam metara da se upiše u strelce, ali mu je Elliot odlično odbranio udarac.

Međutim, u 61. minutu Delle Ali dovodi svoj tim u vođstvo od 0:1.

Na 0:2 povisuje Ben Davies u 70. minutu igre. Game Over.

Po završetku utakmice na pitanje da li će se sresti sa gazdom Ashleyem, Benitez je samo slegao ramenima i rekao: "Ne znam".

“We were not demanding crazy things.

“We were demanding to do things in the right way…like we did with Liverpool, with Chelsea and all the other clubs (I have managed).

“With a professional staff all working together.

“This summer I was expecting other things, but okay we don’t have those things, so now we have to move forward and I will do my best.

“Am I happy with what was going on in the summer? No, I think that we can improve and we can compete and do the right things.’

“What we have at Newcastle, which is different to other Premier League clubs, is the city.

“We have a city behind us – 52,000 every game, a good stadium and everybody is there.

“But what we could do, to save some money, we didn’t do it and now we are in a worse position.

“But still, I have confidence that we can compete. One thing we have and which I said last year and in the end I was right: we will compete until the end.’

“I had two or three players, who came here because of me, they wanted to come here because of me and I couldn’t let them down.

“As you know, my family is in England and I decided to come to a massive club, with potential.”

MIKE ASHLEY: NEWCASTLE CAN'T COMPETE FOR TRANSFER

MIKE ASHLEY ZA SKY SPORTS:

“Every penny the club generates, he can have, but it won’t generate enough," said Ashley.

"It’s Newcastle United. It doesn’t have a £40million-a-year stadium naming rights deal, it doesn’t.

"So I don’t want the fans to watch this interview and think ‘that’s great, Rafa’s getting £150million in the morning’. He’s not.

"With (United managing director) Lee Charnley’s help – and Lee Charnley answers to Rafa, not the other way around, so we’re crystal clear – Rafa makes all the final decisions on the players out and the players in, but he has to do it with the money the club has.

“If you say to me ‘I’m wealthy’. Well, OK. In theory I’m a whatever, a billionaire, maybe even a multi-billionaire, but in reality my wealth is in Sports Direct shares, which, as I said the other week, are like wallpaper.

"I don’t have that cash in the bank, so I don’t have that ability to right a cheque for £200million.

"I don’t have it. It’s very simple, it’s not there. I’d have to sell Sports Direct shares to fund that.

"So people outside of football looking in and the way sometimes it’s portrayed, is that those sort of wealth terms are in the bank – they’re not.

"I’ve got to make it crystal clear that I am nowhere near wealthy enough in football now to compete with the likes of Manchester City etc and not just Man City.

"Basically, it’s a wealthy individual taking on what is the equivalent of countries. I cannot and I will not."
