From Sempre Milan:

Former AC Milan midfielder and current Newcastle star Sandro Tonali has been served legal documents for his involvement in the betting scandal that features three players at this stage.

As has been officially announced by the FIGC, the two Italy internationals have been served the official documentation that says they are under investigation for their role in a betting scandal.

This story first began with Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli being investigated for using illegal betting platforms and potentially betting on football matches.

It then emerged that Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo are also involved. The latter two are now officially being investigated as well.

Tonali and Zaniolo have been allowed to leave Coverciano where they were training for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. The FIGC believe that they won’t be in a fit state to face Malta and England.

From Football Italia:

According to RAI Sport, Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo are accompanied by Italy delegation chief Gigi Buffon while they speak to investigators about the growing betting scandal.

Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli is formally under investigation for betting on illegal sites, but reports are growing that he is not the only player who has been breaching the rules on professionals placing bets.

Gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona alleges that Zaniolo placed bets on Roma’s Coppa Italia games while he was in the squad, plus that Tonali has also been betting.

According to RAI Sport reporter Alessandro Antinelli, Tonali and Zaniolo were spotted alongside chief delegate Buffon meeting with police inside the Coverciano camp to discuss the betting investigation.

It was also confirmed by news agency ANSA that police officials were at the Coverciano training ground.

FIGC statement:

The Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office notified investigation documents to the players Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently in training with the national team at the Federal Technical Center in Coverciano.

Regardless of the nature of the acts, believing that in this situation the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the commitments scheduled in the next few days, the Federation has decided, also to protect them, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.
